Imaginations is a design competition created and sponsored by Walt Disney Imagineering with the purpose of seeking out and nurturing the next generation of diverse Imagineers. The Project for 2019 was:
The world is full of Natural and Ancient wonders that are difficult to enjoy and explore either because they are remote, inhospitable, or have disappeared from time.
In what ways can you create an experience that explores and shares these Wonders safely for a wide range of guests, at or near the original presumed location?
On the horizon, through the darkness, it emerges... a brilliant light almost like a star above the horizon - guiding travelers to shore and safety. The Lighthouse of Alexandria was once a symbol of connection. It united trade routes, ideas, people, and stories from cultures all over the ancient world.
Pharos aims to bring hope, unity and knowledge back to the lighthouse. Whether you want to interact with the incredible history of Alexandria, gaze at the marine life and underwater ruins, or just relax overlooking the city, Pharos will captivate you. Pharos not only revives the past, but also paves the way for a brighter future.
Connecting people, history, and the planet, Pharos is designed with conservation in mind. Water filters and storm protectors are designed to help clean the waters of the East Harbor and reduce degradation of the site. This compliments local efforts to increase guardianship of historic sites. Thus making the incredible history more accessible to people from around the world.
By hiring locally for both construction and exhibit operations, Pharos will bolster the regional economy. This project will also greatly increase theAlexandrian tourism industry. These lasting economic effects will once again make Alexandria the “Pearl of the Mediterranean.”
The project was conceived by the Washington University in St. Louis Team and created for the 2019 Walt Disney Imagineering’s Imaginations Design Competition. This project is the sole property of Walt Disney Imagineering and all rights to use these ideas are exclusive to Walt Disney Imagineering. The competition is a way for students and recent graduates to showcase their talents and for Walt Disney Imagineering to identify new talent.
